So the earth is flat and if you go to the edge you will fall off and be gone forever. So was the thinking back in the fifteenth century long before the Portuguese started making maps. As man became more educated, they wanted to see what the world had to offer, thus the map making began. I fell in love with maps when I was a child. We had visited a friend of the family and in their study was a solid wall of a huge map of the world. I sat for hours looking at all the countries and was enthralled with it. On the other side of the library was the biggest globe I had ever seen and this too was wonderful to spin and pick a country I wanted to visit.
There are many people that use maps and globes of the world to decorate their homes or they will put up a map of the United States for the kids to learn about their own country. I did that with my kids and they learned all the states, capitals, the state bird, the state flower and the main rivers of the country. At one time I actually knew every country in the world but with the ever changing names and new countries popping up all the time, it is hard to keep up with all the changes.
Children should know their own country and getting them a map of any kind will teach them what they need to know about the country they live in. Yes you can go online and look at a map there but to me that is not a lot of fun as actually feeling and touching a real map. A lot of children like globes as they can spin them around and around and stop on a country, we used to look up that country and learn about it. It was a lot of fun and every parent should get a map and or a globe.
There are maps and globes that only depict cities, say you want to go to Chicago, pick up a map of that city and it can be a wealth of information for visiting good old Chicago. Today there are the GPS’s to find whatever city or building you are looking for and they are fine but to learn how to use a ‘paper’ map or globe is becoming a lost art. I fell in love with maps when I was a child and still like to look at them. They guide you where you want to go and then to come back home.
Go online and look up a business or a street in any city in the world and it will give you step by step instructions and which way to turn and how long it will take you to get there. Yes maps and globes are fun to read and to use but they also will teach you many things about what is around you, so learn how to read them and you will be surprised at what they can tell you.
