The Alps in Switzerland have large valleys carved into the mountains.?
What forces helped to shape these valleys?
glaciers.glaciers from in a depression. this happens when snow accumulates and hardens to form ice. the bergschrund at the back of the depression (corrie or cirque) is formed by the weight of the ice,they are simply cracks (crevasses)caused by pressure ridges.as the glacier is finally on the move by the force of gravity it carves out rocky landscapes with incredible force.what makes this ice so powerful is that as it moves,it picks up debris (moraine) on its long slow journey down the mountain slope,the moraine acts as a sandpaper and erodes the sides beside the glacier,this is how the valley is formed. during the ice age,the alps in Switzerland went through a hard time as glaciers were forming everywhere,and it is even still going on today. Huge rocks (erratics) as big as a house are sometimes spotted in Switzerland. they were brought down by the glaciers during the glaciation period. it just comes to show how powerful ice really can be.
